Sophie is an Auckland based artist and illustrator.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008 she opened The High Seas, a shop and gallery which provided a place for local and international art, music, books and zines. The gallery had a focus on comic and illustration art, which was underrepresented in fine art spaces in Auckland at the time. Providing a marketplace for zines was an important element of The High Seas and Sophie has continues to be involved in the Auckland zine community. Her zines have won ‘Best of the Fest’ awards at the Auckland Zinefest and her comics were featured in Three Words: An Anthology of Aotearoa/NZ Women’s Comics.
Sophie has a keen interest in folk art and outsider art as well as a DIY ethos when it comes to art making. She enjoys experimenting with materials and techniques in her practice including painting, printmaking, drawing and more recently collage and 3D work . Her enthusiasm and range of skills are put to use in her current position as an arts and crafts tutor at the Mt Albert Community Club, a day service for people who are currently experiencing or recovering from mental health challenges.
