Joan was born in Auckland and showed a interest in drawing and painting at a early age. She attended Elam School of Fine Arts after leaving Takapuna Grammar School and received a Diploma of Fine Art. For years she taught Art and Art History to seventh form level.
While teaching in Wellington she joined an etching class run by John Drawbridge and fell in love with the whole process. A few years later she gave up teaching and joined a workshop overseas which tutored in etching and stone lithography. On her return she established herself as a fulltime printmaker and worked towards several solo and shared exhibitions. As well she tutored small groups and still continues to do so.
Over the last 20 years or so colour and the immediacy of the painted image has drawn Joan back into painting where she works in watercolour as well as oil and more recently pastel.
Joan is a member of the N.Z. Academy of Fine Arts, Watercolour N.Z. and the Pastel Association of N.Z. and is currently teaching a Drawing class at the Mairangi Arts Centre.
Her commissions include watercolours and etchings for Puka Park Lodge in Pauanui, Coromandel, etchings for the Sheraton Hotel in Auckland and etchings for the N.Z. Society of Anaesthetists. Work is held in Flagstaff Gallery Devonport, The Print Shop in Remuera and Next Door Gallery in Birkenhead.
