Becky Richards is a Christchurch born artist. She holds a BFA(hons) from Ilam School of Fine Arts (2015), and an MFA (first class) from Elam school of Fine Arts (2018). Becky’s practice is based predominantly in sculpture. She has spent the last five years concentrating on clay and ceramics, with a genuine passion for mud. Alongside teaching, Becky is part of the team at Objectspace gallery, where she loves to write and talk about all things ceramic.
Becky encourages her students to experiment with natural motions of clay and hands; taking an organic approach to hand-building in ceramics. Becky is particularly interested in how clay-work can help us stay balanced and curious in an increasingly screen-filled world, and takes a playful attitude to providing her students with new tactile skills – championing a learning-through-trying, hands-on, messy methodology.
