"How do you balance teaching foundational techniques with encouraging a student`s individual voice and unique artistic exploration?"

I like to explore foundational techniques at all stages of development encouraging each persons unique interest and curiosity through allowing them to create their own pieces. My classes are not a predictable cookie cutter “everyone makes the same items and follows along”. It`s more of how to balance the level with the outcome desired. I`m happy to say most of my students are able to attain higher outcomes than their initial expectations.

"If you could distill your personal purpose for creating art into a single sentence, what would it be?

I`m consistently pulled into making with the curiosity within layers, the mesmerizing patterns of retrospection in slices of cross-sections and the snap shots of coloured shavings.

"In your experience, what is the most profound non-visual benefit—emotional, intellectual, or spiritual—that you personally gain from the process of making art?"
My experience of making art is often subversive. When I enter my studio my hands become the guide. Intuition moves my choices. Playful curiosity borders wild abandon. It’s a combination of scientific experimentation meets childhood play. I leave the studio with twinkling eyes and more inspiration for the next session.

"What is the one major hurdle or fear you see students face most often, and what is your most effective method for helping them overcome it and embrace the process of making?"

Through my years of teaching the biggest hurdles are someone`s fear of making mistakes and the need to "make" something because a student signed up for a class. Often the only way to overcome this is moving through it. Clay has its own way of teaching us to embrace the process and each of us has our own "aha" moment when the time is ripe. There is no real way to push someone to a realization.

"How do you balance teaching foundational techniques with encouraging a student`s individual voice & unique artistic exploration?"

I believe the fundamentals are building blocks that give students the tools necessary to develop their own style. I am essentially teaching my students a visual language so that they are able to articulate their own voice, without being held back by a lack of technique. To quote one of my artistic heroes, Glenn Vilppu: “No rules, just tools!”

"If you could distill your personal purpose for creating art into a single sentence, what would it be?"

For me, it’s about finding & creating a deeper meaning in my life. In terms of subject matter, I am very inspired by the language of the figure, as well as portraiture.

"In your experience, what is the most profound non-visual benefit—emotional, intellectual, or spiritual—that you personally gain from the process of making art?"

There are so many profound benefits from making art that I only wish I could encourage everyone to pursue it! It has given me a deeper sense of purpose; a deeper sense of gratitude. It’s a very beautiful thing to slow down & really learn how to see; to pay attention, and to paint with love and care.

"What is the one major hurdle or fear you see students face most often, & what is your most effective method for helping them overcome it & embrace the process of making?"

Being too focused on the result can be a major hurdle for students. I encourage my students to focus on the process rather than the result by teaching them principles & techniques to help build up their skills & confidence. & to remind them that if you are equipped with solid drawing & painting strategies, then to feel like you are ‘struggling’ can actually be a very good thing; it means there is a lot of growth potential, and the repetition of whatever you find difficult is what helps break you through to the next level.
